(VOVWORLD) - Denmark’s King Frederik arrived in Nuuk on Wednesday for his second visit to Greenland within a year, underscoring unity with the Danish territory amid US President Donald Trump’s push to acquire the autonomous island from Denmark.

The visit follows diplomatic talks launched late last month by Greenland, Denmark and the United States aimed at easing tensions among the parties. The Danish government described the exchanges with Washington as constructive, but cautioned that the United States remains interested in taking ownership of the island.

“It is a great pleasure for me to be back in Greenland and to meet the Greenlandic people,” the king told reporters in Nuuk. He added that Greenland’s people and well-being were “very close to my heart.”

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the "most important thing is that the Greenlandic citizens and our population can feel the sense of unity between the Royal House and the Greenlandic people, which every year proves to be very, very strong."
