NATO said the initiative is a "multi-domain activity" that will oversee operations by alliance members in the region, including upcoming exercises by Norway and Denmark.

"Arctic Sentry underscores the alliance's commitment to safeguard its members and maintain stability in one of the world's most strategically significant and environmentally challenging areas," said General Alexus G. Grynkewich, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).

The mission followed US President Donald Trump's expression of interest in acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, citing the national security of the US as a motive. His insistence plunged the transatlantic alliance into its deepest crisis in years.

President Trump backed off after reaching a "framework" agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte which will ensure a greater US influence in the Arctic.
