Established in 1889, Dong Xuan market, from a small market by the river wharf, has become the largest commercial center in northern Vietnam. It bears the strong imprint of the French with its five arched doorways and distinctive honeycomb facade. In the northwest corner of the market is the Monument to the Martyrs to commemorate the National Resistance Day (December 19, 1946).
The alleyways of Dong Xuan market are selling delicious dishes such as snail noodle soup, pork rib porridge, shrimp cakes, and sweet soups. Dong Xuan market is not only a bustling trading hub but also a famous cultural and historical tourist attraction in Hanoi.
