(VOVWORLD) -The National Assembly on Thursday passed, by a vote of 410-63, a resolution to build Gia Binh International Airport in Bac Ninh province.

The aim of the project is to build a next-generation international airport to global standards. Lawmakers said the airport will be smart, green, and sustainable, and will support socio-economic growth, serve dual civil-military use, protect national security, and host major diplomatic events, including the 2027 APEC Summit.

According to the resolution, Gia Binh International Airport will meet 5-star service standards, placing it among the world’s top 10 airports in that category as rated by Skytrax. It will also join the group of airports recognised for outstanding passenger experience by Airports Council International. The airport will become a northern transit hub for passengers and cargo and a regional center for aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul.
The National Assembly also approved, by a vote of 430-43, investment for the Vinh–Thanh Thuy Expressway project.
The Gia Binh International Airport project will cost an estimated 7.45 billion USD. Classified as a 4F airport under International Civil Aviation Organization standards, it is designed to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo per year by 2030, rising to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year by 2050.
