Sanae Takaichi re-elected as Japan’s Prime Minister
(VOVWORLD) - Sanae Takaichi was re-elected as Japan’s Prime Minister on Wednesday at an extraordinary session of the National Diet, following the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) historic landslide victory in the February 8 general election.
The special Diet session is scheduled to run for 150 days, from February 18 to July 17, with deliberations expected to focus on the initial draft budget for fiscal year 2026, which begins in April.
Prior to the opening of the session, Takaichi’s Cabinet resigned en masse in accordance with constitutional requirements. She was formally chosen as Prime Minister during a plenary session of the lower house. The lineup of the new Cabinet is expected to be announced later in the day.
Takaichi is also scheduled to hold a press conference on Wednesday evening to outline her “responsible yet decisive” fiscal policy agenda, including a two-year suspension of consumption tax on food products, a key pledge made by the LDP during the election campaign.
The lower house election victory has provided strong momentum for Takaichi and her party to advance their policy priorities, including expanded fiscal measures.
