UN rights chief sees huge opportunity for a fair transition in Syria

(VOVWORLD) - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said Monday there’s a good chance for an inclusive dialogue on the political transition in Syria.

At a press conference in Geneva, Turk said the coordination of opposition groups in Syria with international support would pave the way for such a dialogue.

Syria’s rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani met Monday with outgoing prime minister Mohammed al-Jalali to coordinate a transfer of power that guarantees the provision of services to Syria’s people. Syria’s parliament said it supports the will of the people to build a new Syria toward a better future governed by law and justice.

Israel will step up airstrikes on Syrian stores of advanced weaponry, Israeli officials said Monday, and keep a limited troop presence on the ground, to head off any threat that might emerge in the fallout of president Bashar al-Assad's overthrow.

Lebanon's Hezbollah views the events in Syria as a dangerous new transformation, Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah said Monday. The Kremlin said it’s too early to speak about the future of Russian bases in Syria. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia will discuss this issue with Syria's ruling force after the transition process.
