US expresses concern over Thailand–Cambodia border situation

(VOVWORLD) - The US State Department on Tuesday issued a statement expressing deep concern over rising tensions along the Thailand–Cambodia border.

Washington called on both sides to immediately halt hostilities to protect civilians and urged a return to the de-escalation measures outlined in the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, which was signed by the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia under the witness of US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Border clashes between the two countries erupted following a brief confrontation on December 7. By the morning of December 8, both sides continued to accuse each other of using heavy weapons in subsequent attacks. Initial reports indicate that at least one soldier of Thailand was killed and eight wounded, while Cambodia recorded four civilian deaths and nine injured.
