The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism reported that Vietnam’s tourism sector was nearly shut down in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, affecting businesses’ supply chains and millions of workers.
Since 2022, the industry has recovered strongly. In 2024, Vietnam welcomed 17.6 million international visitors, 98% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019, ranking among the fastest tourism recoveries in Southeast Asia, the report said.
This year, Vietnam expects 22 million foreign tourists and 140 million domestic visitors.
"Vietnam’s tourism markets have shifted, with strong growth from both traditional and new markets such as India, Australia and the Middle East, while Northeast Asia is recovering quickly," said Nguyen Trung Khanh, Chairman of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
The market is now more diverse and resilient, with new tourism products ranging from beach, cultural and eco-tourism to night tourism, rail travels, cruises and wellness experiences, he added.
