World welcomes UN General Assembly’s adoption of Hanoi Convention
(VOVWORLD) -Public opinion on Tuesday welcomed the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) unanimous adoption of the UN Convention on Cybercrime. The document will be opened for signature in Hanoi in 2025 and will be called the Hanoi Convention, according to Article 64 of the Convention.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the convention as a testament to multilateralism moving in the right direction during challenging times and a reflection of the UN member states’ collective will to foster international cooperation in crime prevention and combat.
UN General Assembly President Philémon Yang called it a vital tool to safeguard people in a world where information technology and cyberspace offer immense potential but also harbor numerous threats.
Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said the adoption of the “Hanoi Convention” is a meaningful victory for multilateralism and an important step forward in the international community’s efforts to address cybercrime.
