Wounded soldier U Nia active in social work

(VOVworld) – At the age of 71, despite physical injuries, U Nia, a war veteran of the Se Dang ethnic group in Dac Ha district, Kon Tum province, is still active in social work. U Nia is respected by villagers for his kindness and helpfulness to those in need.

It is U Nia’s habit to go around the village every morning to see how things are going. He helps the villagers whenever they have a problem. Some ask him to help them resolve disputes relating to land, and neighbor relations.  U Nia is also interested in preserving and promoting the cultural values of his group. Mr. A Thiet, Head of the Department of Culture of Dac Ui commune, said: “Mr. U Nia has a profound knowledge of traditional culture. I often come to him for information about traditional culture. He’s very helpful”.

The experience he got in the army has helped him a lot in doing the social work. In 1967, U Nia joined the guerilla group of Dac Ui commune, then became a soldier in the D2 battalion of Gia Lai – Kon Tum province and worked for the Dac To district armed forces until his retirement. After leaving the army, U Nia got involved in local social work. As Secretary of the commune’s Party Committee, U Nia has worked out specific plans to improve the war veterans, women, and youth union groups in the area. Thanks to the effectiveness of local groups and organizations, Kon Tum has been the leading village in Dac Ui commune in socio-economic development, preserving traditional culture, and new rural development. Tran Xuan Lanh, Chairman of Dac Ui commune’s Elderly Association, said: “Mr. U Nia is an army official and a war veteran. His health is not very good, but despite his poor health, he is still active in social work. He often helps poor and lonely people in the village”.

One year ago, U Nia was appointed Head of the village’s Elderly Group. Having contributed to the war effort, now U Nia now contributes to national construction and defense: “When I was young, I joined the army to defend the nation. In peace time, I still do my best to promote national solidarity and economic development”.

In his old age, U Nia is still active in community work. His happiness is ensuring that the villagers around him have a prosperous and happy life.
