Unlike those planted in major cities or school campuses, the wild crepe myrtles along Cat Tien’s coast have smaller individual flowers. They grow across the hillsides, spreading among moss-covered rocks, shrubs, and other wild vegetation. (Photo: Nguyen Gia/VTC News)
Some crepe myrtles here have thick, tall trunks and broad canopies. They have dense petals and form large clusters in shades ranging from pastel violet to deep purple, covering much of the foliage beneath them. (Photo: Nguyen Gia/VTC News)

Crepe myrtles grow most abundantly on the hillside behind a local temple dedicated to national hero Nguyen Trung Truc and on Da Mu Mountain in Cat Tien Commune. Some of the older trees have tall trunks and canopies stretching more than 10 meters across. (Photo: Nguyen Gia/VTC News)
Crepe myrtles usually bloom once a year, but those in this area flower twice a year, said local resident Vo Ke Muoi. He added that the late-September rains helped the trees flourish, producing blooms in shades ranging from pastel violet to deep purple. (Photo: Nguyen Gia/VTC News)
Tran Hoa, a local bonsai enthusiast, said many bonsai growers visit Cat Tien Commune to collect wild crepe myrtle specimens. He said the trees are prized for their beautiful colors and vigorous growth. Grafted onto mature trunks, they can also make the trees more resistant to pests and diseases. “Local authorities and forest rangers are doing a great job of preserving the crepe myrtles here. These trees are what make this place so special. The colorful flowers, rocky hills, vegetation, and sea come together to create a stunning natural landscape,” Hoa said. (Photo: Nguyen Gia/VTC News)
