Immediately after typhoon Maysak dissipates, residents along the coast of Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh province are amazed to see mountain dracaena flowers in full bloom on the rocky islets.
The yellow colour of the blossoms and the green colour of the foliage blend with the gray rock, the blue sea and sky, and the colourful boats, making the natural landscape more poetic.
Growing on the limestone islands of Ha Long Bay, mountain dracaena (Dracaena cambodiana) is one of the area’s most distinctive plant species. While not endemic exclusively to Ha Long Bay, its presence has become closely associated with the landscape, thriving among the rugged cliffs and coastal environment.
Scattered across the rocky islets of Ha Long Bay, mountain dracaena thrives in one of nature’s most challenging habitats. With sturdy stems and sword-shaped leaves, these small plants produce clusters of vivid flowers that stand out dramatically against the weathered grey limestone cliffs.
Clinging to the rugged limestone landscape of Ha Long Bay, mountain dracaenas grow in clusters along cliffs and near the water’s edge. Their roots hold tightly to the rocks, while their slender stems reach toward the sunlight, quietly enduring wind and waves.

After more than 20 years guiding visitors through Ha Long Bay, Dao Thi Thuy, a tour guide with the Ha Long Bay – Yen Tu World Heritage Site Management Board, says she is still captivated by the rare beauty of mountain dracaena flowers when they burst into bloom.
The blossoms are so abundant that, along almost every sightseeing route, visitors can see mountainsides covered in thousands of flower clusters, draping Ha Long Bay in a “new cloak” that is delicate and radiant.
Unlike the scattered blooms of previous years, mountain dracaena has flowered more abundantly and synchronously this summer than in recent memory. On the cliffs of Bai Tho Mountain in Hong Gai ward, the contrast between blossoms and limestone creates a rare spectacle and a powerful symbol of resilience.
For local residents, this flowering season carries special meaning. Just two years ago, Super Typhoon Yagi, which struck in September 2024, devastated forests on many of the bay's rocky islands, leaving hillsides scorched and barren within hours.
Despite concerns over the damaged landscape, mountain dracaena and other native plants have quietly regenerated from the rocky terrain, gradually restoring the bay's natural beauty.
Beyond their beauty, these flowers invite visitors to look closer at the hidden biodiversity of Ha Long Bay. The bay is not only a geological masterpiece shaped over millions of years, but also a living ecosystem where plants and wildlife continue to thrive.
