At a high-level plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, a meeting that commemorated International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, voiced concern over declining commitments to nuclear disarmament, the expansion of nuclear arsenals, and growing reliance on nuclear deterrence in security strategies.
Building on discussions at the 11th Review Conference on the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Ambassador Viet called on nuclear-weapon states to maintain dialogue to reduce nuclear risks, strengthen transparency and accountability, and fulfill their commitment to the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
Mr. Viet also urged nuclear-weapon states to sign and ratify the Protocol to the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) and reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and to strengthening multilateralism and international law to rid the world of nuclear weapons.
