The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation was aimed at "imposing a heavy cost" on Iran for targeting commercial shipping.

US officials said the strikes targeted air defense systems, coastal surveillance facilities, surface-to-air missile batteries, anti-ship cruise missile launchers, drones, and port infrastructure.

The strikes came after 3 merchant vessels were attacked in the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.

Two of the vessels were carrying energy cargoes, including a Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker and a Saudi crude oil tanker. The ships were attacked while sailing near Oman's coast, outside a shipping route designated by Iran.
