This is a particularly important visit, marking General Secretary and President To Lam’s first trip to India in his new position, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the two countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (2016–2026). India is one of Vietnam’s leading comprehensive strategic partners in the region, with the two sides enjoying a high level of political trust, shared strategic interests, and a long-standing foundation of cultural and people-to-people ties.

Vietnam is an important partner in India’s “Act East” policy and in the Indo-Pacific region. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong said: “This state visit to India by General Secretary and State President To Lam provides an excellent opportunity for the leaders of both countries to discuss, reach consensus, and outline major directions, orientations, and breakthrough measures to elevate bilateral relations to a new level. It will help further promote practical cooperation in trade and investment, tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and science and technology.”

Vietnam–India bilateral relations have made strong progress across various fields. In 2025, total bilateral trade reached nearly 16.5 billion USD. In the first quarter of this year, trade turnover hit 4.8 billion USD, up 28% year-on-year. As of March 2026, Indian investors had more than 500 operational projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital exceeding 1.1 billion USD.
