This is Trump's first visit to China since 2017, and the first state visit to China by a US President in nine years. First Lady Melania Trump is not accompanying President Trump this time.
President Trump attended a welcome ceremony on Thursday morning hosted by President Xi. Following the ceremony, the two leaders had a two-hour conversation. Xi and Trump visited the Temple of Heaven, a 15th century site where emperors in the Ming and Qing dynasties worshiped Heaven and prayed for bountiful harvests.
Trump will attend a state banquet in the evening. He will have a tea and working lunch with Xi on Friday before returning to Washington, the White House said in a statement.
