The pause in fighting is expected to last at least until the US midterm elections in early November.
The US’s immediate priority is restoring the flow of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump has said that all sea mines in the strait have been destroyed or removed, and any vessel attempting to lay new mines will be targeted.
US officials have said that unmanned underwater vehicles detected more than 100 mines in recent months and neutralized them.
Meanwhile, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, met in Tehran to discuss a framework for establishing a joint maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and coordinating mine-clearance efforts.
The two agreed to continue negotiating a long-term solution and to consult with other countries bordering the Persian Gulf.
