In an interview with the media marking the 50th anniversary of cooperation between Vietnam and UNESCO, Mr. Van said Vietnam–UNESCO relations have been recognised by UNESCO and its member states as a successful, dynamic, substantive and effective model of cooperation.

Over the next five decades Vietnam will focus on four key areas. First, Vietnam will promote its leading role in implementing the International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development 2027–2036. As the initiator of the initiative, Vietnam will work closely with UNESCO, the core group, and other partners to translate the resolution into substantive action, with a focus on integrating culture into development policies, promoting the cultural industries and the creative economy, and advancing heritage education linked to sustainable livelihoods.

Second, Vietnam will actively advocate for, run for and fulfil its role as a member of UNESCO’s key agencies, thereby enhancing the country’s image and standing while safeguarding its national interests.

Third, Vietnam will support localities, ministries and sectors in developing and promoting dossiers for UNESCO designations. The Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO is supporting 23 localities submitting 48 dossiers of various types of UNESCO designations. The goal is to secure more designations and turn heritage into drivers for socio-economic development and a source of national soft power.

Finally, Vietnam will proactively propose initiatives and host UNESCO activities of international significance.
