With only a few days remaining before the tournament concludes, FIFA announced that cumulative attendance at venues in the US, Canada, and Mexico has surpassed a historic milestone.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially set a new all-time attendance record, drawing more than 6.5 million spectators to stadiums in the three host countries.
This record-breaking 2026 competition is the first World Cup to feature 48 national teams, including ten African representatives, up from 32 teams in previous editions. This expanded format includes a total of 104 matches.
Most notably, the 2026 edition has already exceeded the combined attendance figures of the previous two World Cups while four matches remain to be played before the tournament concludes this Sunday, July 19. The 2018 tournament in Russia and the 2022 tournament in Qatar attracted a combined total of 6.44 million spectators, despite each featuring 64 matches.
According to a FIFA report, stadium occupancy has reached 99.7%, with an average attendance of more than 65,000 spectators per match, underscoring the success of the first-ever 48-team World Cup.
A major highlight of the summer-long event were the official FIFA Fan Festival sites spread across the three host countries, amassing more than 7.7 million visits during the tournament.
Beyond its real-world success, the 2026 World Cup also generated massive digital engagement, with FIFA reporting over 20 billion video views, 30 billion impressions, and 1.7 billion social media interactions, far surpassing the same period at the tournament in Qatar.
The most viral content included Norway's unique Viking-style boat celebration which garnered 174 million views on TikTok and Shakira's spectacular opening ceremony performance.
FIFA Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said, “Even the fact that you're talking about last World Cup having 1.5 billion viewers, which is 13 Super Bowls in one night. So, the scale of it is extraordinary. And I think that this is really the world's moment where the whole world is united. It really has brought together when you have fans from one country embracing a fan from the other and the unity that creates.”
World Cup 2026 is creating exciting match-ups and setting a series of new milestones for fan attendance.
