The 116-minute film was co-directed by Dao Duy Phuc and Nguyen Manh Ha, from a screenplay by Dao Thuy Trang. The film follows Tam, a female revolutionary who disguises herself as a nurse to care for prisoners at Con Dao Prison. There, she contacts Phan Duy and other revolutionaries who are secretly carrying out revolutionary missions under the harsh conditions of imprisonment.
The cast brings together People's Artist Bui Bai Binh, Meritorious Artist Dang Tat Binh, and young actors Nguyen Thuy Duong, Nguyen Quang Thuan, and Nguyen Vinh Xuong, alongside several foreign actors, including Maurise Nash, Martin Kruger, and Charlie Win.
Director Dao Duy Phuc said: "While researching historical materials on Con Dao Prison, we were deeply honored and inspired by the revolutionary heroes and martyrs who fought and sacrificed their lives there. We felt their resilience, determination, and unwavering aspiration for freedom."
To faithfully recreate the historical setting, most of the outdoor scenes were shot at the Special National Relic Site of Con Dao Prison, the notorious prison complex built by the French colonial administration and later expanded by the US to detain tens of thousands of Vietnamese revolutionaries. Studio sets were constructed to be faithful to historical facts.
Nguyen Quang Thuan, who plays revolutionary prisoner Phan Duy, said: "When I first read the script, the scene that impressed me most was Phan Duy being tortured in a tiger cage. Before filming, I felt extremely tense and emotional because I had never experienced torture myself. Fortunately, the directors and the screenwriter guided me to overcome the psychological pressure. I hope the film will help audiences, especially young people, understand the hardships and sacrifices endured by our predecessors, who sacrificed their youth to fight for the country's independence."
“Sound across the ocean”, a State-commissioned movie on the theme of Vietnam’s revolutionary struggle, will officially open at the National Cinema Centre and other cinemas nationwide on July 24.
