The aid package will be delivered through UN agencies, rather than directly to the Cuban Government, said Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai in a joint statement.

The package is mainly for providing food and essential supplies. The severe fuel shortages in Cuba have affected transportation, production, and the supplies of energy and other goods.

Cuba currently meets about 40% of the fuel it needs domestically and depends heavily on imports for the rest. As supplies dwindle, rising prices for food and transportation are significantly affecting people's lives.
