(VOVWORLD) - Chinese President Xi Jinping had a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday to discuss bilateral trade and other political issues, President Trump's visit to Beijing in April, and other international issues of mutual concern.

President Xi said he attaches great importance to the US-China relations and hopes that, in the new year, the two sides can jointly steer bilateral ties steadily forward amid challenges, and achieve major results. As long as China and the US uphold equality, mutual respect, mutual benefit, and move towards the same direction, they can find solutions to each other's concerns, he added.
The two sides should follow the common understandings they have reached, enhance dialogue and communication, manage differences, and expand practical cooperation, Xi said, stressing the need to build trust step-by-step, find a way to get along, and advance toward mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
Following the phone call, President Trump announced that China has agreed to buying more US soybeans. "The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extremely good one", he said. "I believe that there will be many positive results achieved over the next three years of my Presidency having to do with President Xi, and the People’s Republic of China", Trump added.
