Europe stands in full solidarity with Denmark on Greenland

(VOVWORLD) -European nations who oppose the US plan to accquire Greenland issued a joint statement on Sunday expressing solidarity with Denmark and the people of the Arctic island.

In the joint statement, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, said the EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland. “Territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law”.

“We have consistently underlined our shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, including through NATO,” according to the statement.

“Tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to upholding its sovereignty,” the joint statement said.

In a social media post on Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced he would impose a 10% import tariff starting February 1 on goods from eight European countries over Greenland spat.

Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom will face the tariff, which will increase to 25% on June 1 until a "deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland," President Trump said.

In response, the European Union on Sunday convened an emergency meeting in Brussels, Belgium, attended by the ambassadors of the 27 EU member states. The meeting aimed to assess the impact of US tariff threats and coordinate a common EU response, given that sovereignty and security issues linked with trade sanctions could set a dangerous precedent.
