According to Macron, the new Prime Minister will be responsible for “forming a government of general interest” with priority given to passing the budget.
Macron accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Barnier on Thursday. He asked Barnier and his government to stay onin a caretaker capacity “until the appointment of a new government”, his office said in a statement.
Amid calls by some for his own resignation, Macron insisted he will stay on until his term ends in 2027. He acknowledged responsibility for his decision to call a snap election this summer, which ended with no clear majority in Parliament.
