"We need to realize on both sides of the Atlantic that we are stronger together.... So let's repair and revive transatlantic trust together," the German Chancellor said and described the Munich conference as a seismograph for the state of US-European relations.

“Together we have entered an era that is once again marked by power and big-power politics.” These big powers, Merz said, “make their own rules. It is fast, harsh and often unpredictable."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated the EU’s willingness "shoulder more responsibility for its own security" amid Washington's questioning of its allies' defense spending levels.

Taking place over three days from Friday to Sunday, the MSC brought together more than 60 heads of state and government, along with approximately 100 foreign and defense ministers. 5,000 police officers have been deployed for the event.

Amidst a volatile global geopolitical landscape and questions surrounding traditional security commitments, Germany's call for a “new transatlantic partnership” reflects Europe's efforts to maintain its strategic alliance with the US while preparing for greater self-reliance in defense and security in the future.
