At the age of 81, meritorious teacher Nguyen Trong Vinh still dedicates himself to his career in education. After leaving the army 25 years ago, Mr. Vinh and his wife Duong Thi Thinh opened a private school named after Nguyen Sieu. Vinh said the most difficult thing was finding a place to set up the school: “We invested a lot in the school’s facilities but had to change to the site repeatedly. After having changed 8 different times, we managed to settle down and develop the school as it is today”.
The Nguyen Sieu school system includes a primary school, a secondary school and a high school and operates as a boarding school. Vinh had to overcome many difficulties to create the school. Starting with just 5 classes and 132 students, Nguyen Sieu school now has 91 classes and nearly 2,500 students. Mr. Vinh says the school has always considered moral education as central to its operation. Nguyen Ha My is a 12th grader at Nguyen Sieu: “Along with general knowledge, we are taught how to be good people. I am impressed by Mr. Vinh’s lifestyle and personality. He is kind and fair to everyone”.
Under Vinh’s management, Nguyen Sieu school has become a first-rate school. It was the first Vietnamese school authorized by the UK’s Cambridge University to conduct international training programs.
In 2010, Vinh was awarded the title “Meritorious Teacher”. In 2014, he was honored by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Association as an outstanding Hanoi’s intellectual. This year, Vinh was one of 9 persons recognized as outstanding citizens of Hanoi.
