The visit followed the conclusion of the Vietnamese top leader's activities related to the High-Level General Debate of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly and bilateral engagements in the United States.
Welcoming General Secretary and President To Lam and the delegation at the airport were Canadian government minister, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Jim Nickel, Vietnamese Ambassador to Canada Pham Vinh Quang and embassy staff.
This state visit by General Secretary and President To Lam holds historic significance, marking the first time the leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam has paid an official visit to Canada since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1973. Furthermore, the visit takes place at a time when Vietnam-Canada relations are converging on favorable conditions to enter a phase of deeper and more substantive cooperation.
The visit aims to foster a Vietnam-Canada relationship that is increasingly substantive, balanced, and effective—commensurate with the potential, strengths, and needs of both countries. It will usher in a new phase of strategic and comprehensive development between the two countries, contributing actively to peace and stability in the region and the world.
