The statement came after Washington announced on Monday it is stepping up sanctions against Iran.
"With measures that the government's economic sectors have foreseen, America will not achieve anything with economic pressure at this stage, just as it was unable to achieve anything in the war," Pezeshkian said. Iran's principle is understanding and resolving issues through interaction and negotiation, but it will stand firm against economic pressures "as we have done so far and will continue to do," he said.
Talks between Iran and the United States have stalled as the two sides wrangle over control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Traffic through this vital waterway has been largely paralyzed, disrupting global energy markets.
On Wednesday, Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Hormuz is under its control and will only open if the US accepts Tehran's conditions.
