Bakeries selling creative handmade bakeries in Nanchang city, Jiangxi province, are packed with customers, with one shop saying it had sold around 3,000-4,000 boxes of mooncakes in just a few days.
Bakers in Qingzhou city, Shandong province, has created a lotus-shaped mooncake that can be taken apart and reassembled. Each part of the cake, like the lotus petal, receptacle, and leaf has its own unique flavor.
Dongjiang city in Heilongjiang province on the other hand, is launching mooncakes made with fresh sturgeon meat, a local specialty.
There are also mooncakes for health conscious consumers.
Liu Huifang, Deputy Director of the Nutrition Department at the Ningxia Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said, “We have created ten cake flavors corresponding to five distinct color groups. Traditional medicine holds that "the five colors nourish the five internal organs," meaning that the five colors of food provide nourishment to the body's five vital organs. We have applied this principle to deliver both delicious flavor and health benefits to those who enjoy our products."
