Prolonged insecurity in the area could disrupt the flow of commercial goods and humanitarian aid. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said hostilities along Yemen’s west coast have caused thousands of people to flee across the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to seek safety in Djibouti which is creating new humanitarian crises in both Yemen and Djibouti.

UN officials said nearly half of Yemen’s 41 million people need humanitarian assistance as acute hunger continues to worsen. The UN warned that instability and disruptions to shipping operations could increase food insecurity, healthcare needs, and public security concerns in Yemen.
