Professor Nguyen Thi Kim Lan at work
In her 40 years of working and teaching, professor Nguyen Thi Kim Lan has conducted numerous research studies to help farmers fight diseases in animals. She is also the author of numerous publications now used as reference sources by veterinary students. Ms. Lan told VOV: "I’ve always been determined to put all my passion and devotion into everything I do. Once I start a project, I’ll try my best to achieve the best possible result. I think that was how I did well in all my research and training activities."
One of Professor Lan’s studies was on epidemiological features and the application of a diagnostic kit for testing trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma evansi in cattle in several northern provinces, and recommendations for prevention and treatment. Thanks to her diagnostic kit, it now takes veterinarians just one day to determine the cause of animal diseases. Tran Thi Thuy Nga is head of the diagnosis and laboratory unit of the Thai Nguyen provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Veterinary Division: "The diagnostic kit has proven to be very accurate and effective. Diagnosis has been made much faster and easier for timely treatment. This has helped protect the animals and reduce economic losses."
Professor Lan has received numerous prestigious prizes for her research achievements and contributions to national development, including the title “Emeritus Teacher”, and the Labor Order, third class. Lan won the 2014 Kovalevskaia prize honoring female academics with outstanding achievements in the sciences or arts and humanities. Lan said: "Veterinary studies should be applicable to preventing epidemics. For vets like us, the goal is to protect farmers’ animals, especially in remote areas, to help them escape poverty."
