Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, Minister Counsellor Nguyen Hai Luu, reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent position in support of the universal goals of the decolonization process and the inalienable right to self-determination of the peoples of the 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories, in accordance with the UN Charter, the General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV) and relevant resolutions.

Vietnam supports a case-by-case approach that takes into account the historical, political, economic, social and cultural circumstances of each territory and the interests and aspirations of its people.

Minister Counsellor Luu said that, drawing on the historical experience of a nation that endured colonial rule and fought for independence, Vietnam deeply understands the value of independence, freedom and the right to self-determination.

Vietnam remains committed to constructive cooperation with the UN, the Special Committee on Decolonization, administering States and other parties to achieve substantive progress on the decolonization agenda.

UN General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV), adopted on December 14, 1960, on the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, affirms the right of peoples to self-determination and laid the foundation for the UN decolonization process.
