The statement, issued at UN headquarters in New York on Thursday, said ships must be allowed to pass safely through the strategic waterway without being subjected to fees or conditions unlawful under international law.
The statement condemned Iran’s attacks on countries in the region and actions disrupting international trade, supply chains, and energy transportation. It also condemned attacks by the Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia and maritime activities in the Red Sea.
The signatories expressed particular concern over the Houthi advance toward the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a key maritime route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. If shipping through the area continues to be disrupted, the impact on global trade could be serious.
