From departure to operations at sea, all fishing vessels are monitored through the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS).
Besides patrols, inspections and monitoring activities, the Coast Guard Region 4 Command has intensified communications to improve fishermen's compliance with maritime boundary rules and the usage of digital technology to quickly access fisheries regulations and information on IUU fishing violations.
Colonel Nguyen Van Tranh, Deputy Commander for Legal Affairs of the Coast Guard Region 4 Command, said: “We have strengthened defence diplomacy and maintain a regular hotline with the Forward Tactical Headquarters of the Cambodian Army. Whenever fishing vessels showing signs of possible violations are detected, both sides work together to prevent infringements at an early stage. This communication channel also helps protect lawfully operating Vietnamese fishing vessels from improper inspections, ensuring a common approach to law enforcement while safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of our fishermen. We also maintain effective defence cooperation with the maritime law enforcement agencies of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.”
Vietnam's south-western waters are home to an international shipping route with heavy traffic from both commercial ships and fishing vessels. The Coast Guard Region 4 Command has tightened surveillance while coordinating with relevant forces to prevent maritime violations, smuggling and trade fraud.
