Under the project, a portion of fishing vessels will be transferred to other sectors to rebalance fishing capacity in accordance with resource reserves. This will improve the productivity, quality, and efficiency of the fishing fleet, ensuring that 100% of fishermen who switch professions have stable jobs and income, contributing to combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Furthermore, to contribute to the restructuring of the fisheries sector, minimize destructive fishing practices, and support sustainable livelihoods for fishermen, the People's Council of Dong Thap province has issued a Resolution stipulating policies to support the conversion and decommissioning of fishing vessels that are no longer needed for fishing operations in the province.
The province will support organizations and individuals who legally own fishing vessels with a length of 6 meters or more, registered in Dong Thap, belonging to fishing groups with a high level of harmfulness to aquatic resources, and who voluntarily apply for the decommissioning of their vessels and conversion to other occupations as well as ceasing further fishing activities.
The total implementation cost is estimated at over 1.1 million USD. The implementation period is from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2030. Dong Thap currently has 1,523 fishing vessels, with a total of 9,590 people directly engaged in fishing activities.
