EU calls for more ambitious goals for climate issues

(VOVWORLD) -Amid concerns that the international community's efforts to combat climate change are on the decline, the European Union (EU) on Saturday urged the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 25) to send a strong message that many countries are willing to make more efforts to reduce emissions.

As planned, the sessions on climate change should end on December 13 in Madrid (Spain), but were pushed back to the weekend because the parties could not resolve the disagreement related to the Paris Agreement on climate change signed 4 years ago. Speaking at the latest session, Finnish Environment Minister Krista Mikkonen on behalf of the EU, emphasized that the conference could not end without agreeing a strong message about the importance of strengthening commitments on emissions cut next year. She said that this is what the world is expecting, and called for the conference to listen to calls from outside. Nepal, Switzerland, Uruguay and the Marshall Islands responded to the EU call for climate ambitions.
