(VOVWORLD) - Cooperation between Japan and the UK as “Enhanced Global Strategic Partners” symbolizes the inseparability of security in the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae said at a summit in Tokyo on Saturday with her British counterpart, Keir Starmer.
The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across a broad range of areas, including security, the economy, outer space, science, and technology.
They also agreed to strategically strengthen cooperation in cyber security, accelerate trilateral joint development with Italy of a next-generation fighter jet under the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), and convene “two-plus-two” foreign and defense ministerial talks later this year.
Takaichi and Starmer highlighted the importance of the two countries’ close coordination in multilateral diplomatic forums and on international issues of mutual concern.
Starmer’s trip marks his first visit to Japan since taking office in July 2024.
Analysts say the visit represents a significant step for both countries in reinforcing security cooperation and adapting to a rapidly evolving global security environment.
