(VOVWORLD) - US President Donald Trump has admitted he’s not sure whether Republicans will prevail in the midterm elections next year and keep control of the House of Representatives, despite his belief that Republicans deserve to win.
Historically, the party in control of the White House has lost seats in the House during midterm elections. Given the GOP’s thin grip on the House already, the Democrats are widely favored to regain control.
To try to defy history, Trump has mounted a campaign to get red-state Republicans to engage in ahead-of-schedule redistricting to redraw congressional district borders in a way that will favor the GOP.
Blue states have responded with redistricting efforts of their own. Political analysts believe this redistricting race has largely been a wash so far, but Trump is pressuring additional red states to redraw their maps.
Also looming over the midterm elections is the US Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision on a challenge to Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits race-based redistricting. If the Supreme Court upholds the challenge to Section 2, it could be a significant boon for Republicans in the South.
