(VOVWORLD) - US President Donald Trump said on Friday that negotiations aimed at ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine were progressing “very well,” raising the possibility of a new development in the diplomatic process.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the talks held in the United Arab Emirates had gone smoothly and could yield a breakthrough, though he declined to provide further details. The US President has repeatedly vowed to bring an end to the conflict, which began in February 2022. However, more than a year into his second term in office, the conflict continues, with deep divisions persisting between the parties.
US and Ukrainian negotiators have discussed the ambitious aim of reaching a peace agreement by March, according to sources familiar with the talks. Those sources cautioned, however, that the timeline is likely to slip due to the absence of agreement on territorial issues, one of the most contentious obstacles in the negotiations.
