(VOVWORLD) - A high-profile general of the Russian military has been shot at an apartment building in Moscow on Friday.

He was immediately taken to the hospital following what has been called "an attempted assassination" aimed at a high-ranking Russian military figure.
Russia’s State Investigative Committee spokesperson, Svetlana Petrenko, said an “unidentified individual fired several shots” at First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (GRU), Vladimir Alekseyev, in a residential building on Volokolamskoe Highway in northwest Moscow, before fleeing the scene
No further information on the victim's condition has been provided.
An investigation is underway to look for the shooter and those involved. A criminal case has been opened on charges of attempted murder and illegal firearms trafficking.
