Vietnam, EU issue Joint Statement on upgrading relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam and the European Union (EU) on Thursday issued a Joint Statement announcing the upgrade of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, on the occasion of the official visit to Vietnam (January 28–29) by President of the European Council António Costa, at the invitation of State President Luong Cuong.

The Vietnam–EU Joint Statement on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership comprises 60 articles. In its opening, the statement affirms the importance of a partnership grounded in shared interests and common values of peace, security, and prosperity within a rules-based international order founded on international law. It underscores that the new partnership elevates Vietnam–EU relations to a new level across bilateral, regional, and multilateral dimensions.

Within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Vietnam and the EU commit to further deepening cooperation across a wide range of areas to deliver tangible benefits and contribute to peace, stability, cooperation, and prosperity regionally and globally, in line with existing agreements.

Key areas of cooperation include strengthening political cooperation; enhancing economic, trade, and investment ties; reinforcing cooperation on peace, defense, and security; advancing collaboration in science and technology and people-to-people exchanges; promoting inclusive and sustainable development; expanding cooperation in agriculture, the maritime economy, ocean conservation, and sustainable exploitation; and enhancing environmental cooperation, safe and sustainable energy transition, low-carbon development, and climate action.

The two sides will enhance cooperation in strengthening good governance, the rule of law, human rights, and judicial cooperation; digital transformation, connectivity, and sustainable transport; labor and finance; and healthcare; and reinforce regional and multilateral collaboration.
