He is a member of the Politburo (13th and 14th tenures), a member of the Party Central Committee (12th, 13th and 14th tenures), Secretary of the Party Central Committee (13th and 14th tenures), and a deputy to the National Assembly (15th and 16th tenures).
From April 2016 to October 2020, he served as Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam. He was Chief of the Office of the Party Central Committee from October 2020 to January 2021.
From January 2021 to May 2024, he served as a Secretary of the Party Central Committee (13th tenure) and Chief of the Office of the Party Central Committee.
From May to June 2024, he concurrently held two key positions: Head of the Party Central Committee’s Organization Commission and Chief of the Office of the Party Central Committee.
After the position of Chief of the Office of the Party Central Committee was filled, from June 2024 he continued to serve as Head of the Party’s Central Committee’s Organization Commission.
At the 14th National Party Congress, he was elected to the Party Central Committee and the Politburo (14th tenure), and was assigned to the Secretariat while continuing to serve as the Party Central Committee’s Organization Commission.
On April 7, 2026, he was elected Prime Minister by the National Assembly.
