Iran’s ISNA news agency confirmed that Araghchi will meet and hold discussions with the mediators, but no US representative will attend the meeting. High on the agenda will be Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the future of the peace talks.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement confirming that Araghchi will not extend his stay in New York. He is scheduled to remain there only until Wednesday, September 30 – exactly one week after Iran proposed reopening the Strait within seven days.
On the same day, US President Donald Trump said American officials had been in contact with mediators in an effort to find a resolution to the conflict between the US and Iran. Trump said he believed the US would soon achieve victory in the war and insisted that Iran would not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
