Hanegbi confirmed on Tuesday that his tenure had ended after Prime Minister Netanyahu announced plans to appoint a replacement. The current NSC Deputy Chairman, Gil Reich, will assume the role of acting head of the council.
According to Israeli media reports, Hanegbi’s dismissal came after he opposed the airstrike on Qatar last month, and the large-scale military operation in the Gaza strip known as 'Gideon's Tank 2'.
Hanegbi, who was born in 1957, is a veteran Israeli politician who has held several key positions, including Minister of Justice, Minister of Internal Security, and Minister of Environment. He was appointed head of the National Security Council in 2023.
