Speaking to reporters at the White House, President Trump said he wants any future summit with Putin to be held with the prospect of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in sight. "I want it, but I want to do it when we're ready to do a peace deal,” he said.
Washington and Moscow have recently resumed a high-level dialogue. The last time Trump and Putin met was in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025, but that summit did not produce any results.
Trump reaffirmed his desire to end the conflict in Ukraine, which has dragged on for more than 4 years, but acknowledged that differences between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy make it hard to reach a deal.
