In Spain, the military emergency response unit has been deployed to support firefighters in extinguishing a wildfire spreading in Avila province, northwest of Madrid. The fire broke out on Monday night, forcing 50 people to evacuate. Aircraft, helicopters, and ground crews have been mobilized to contain the blaze.
Also on Monday, fires near Puertollano temporarily disrupted high-speed rail service between Madrid and Andalusia, after burning about 180 hectares of forest.
Portugal mobilized 2,000 firefighters and 26 firefighting aircraft to tackle 10 major wildfires, mainly in the northern and central regions. The fire in Ponte da Barca burned 2,000 hectares of forest and forced local residents to evacuate. Portuguese authorities have warned of more risks of wildfires in the coming days due to hot and dry weather.
