In letters to member states and UN personnel made public Tuesday, the UN chief said the impact of cuts will be spread across the UN’s three pillars of peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development. Programs for least-developed nations will be spared, he said.
More than 2,600 jobs will be cut, and at least 200 people will be relocated from Geneva and New York to less expensive cities like Nairobi, Guterres said. The new budget, part of the “UN80” initiative aimed at making the organization leaner and more efficient, will be discussed and voted on by the UN General Assembly before the end of the year.
