Authorities have declared a state of emergency in dozens of states to respond to heavy snowfall, hail, and fierce winds, which have driven temperatures to record lows of -20 to -30 degrees Celsius in many areas.

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the the agency activated its National Response Coordination Center and Regional Response Coordination Centers and is working with local and state authorities to ensure that those in need receive assistance and to prepare for the coming days.

The snowstorm caused serious transportation disruptions, with at least 10,000 flights canceled and thousands more delayed across the United States, including major airports such as Washington, Dallas, and New York. Road traffic in many states was severely affected, with people advised to avoid travel unless necessary, as roads were slippery, visibility was poor, and icy conditions could persist.

The US National Weather Service warned this monster storm has a vast area of impact stretching thousands of kilometers from the Midwest to the Northeast, where there will be heavy snowfall, icy winds, and hail.
