(VOVworld) – Vietnam being elected a UN Human Rights Council member continues to capture both domestic and international interests. Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN, stressed that VN won the highest number of votes to become a UNHR Council member, showing international acknowledgment of the national renewal’s comprehensive achievements. He added that with this membership, Vietnam could now share more experience with the international community in this field.

Regarding this issue, Deputy Head of Ho Chi Minh City’s Bar Association Truong Trong Nghia believed that the world has legitimate rights to select Vietnam to the UNHR Council. Meanwhile, Chairwoman of the NA Committee on Social Affairs, Truong Thi Mai, said that Vietnam’s recent achievements in human rights had contributed to the country’s legal regulations, putting people at the center of any issue. Head of the NA External Relations Committee, Tran Van Hang, called this evidence for Vietnam’s great success in protecting and promoting human rights. This is clearly reflected in the revised Draft of the 1992 Constitution being discussed at the on-going National Assembly’s 6th session, in which human rights are put at the forefront. Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh, President of the Vietnam Association for Agent Orange/Dioxin Victims, said the election was a worthy reflection of Vietnam’s efforts in the area of human rights.
Chuck Searcy, a US war veteran who has been residing in Vietnam since 1995, expressed his belief that once it had become a member of the UNHR Council, Vietnam would further its efforts in promoting basic human rights, as stated in Vietnam’s Constitution.
