(VOVWORLD)-The European Parliament on Tuesday approved a binding 2040 climate target to reduce net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 90% compared to 1990 levels, aiming for EU climate neutrality by 2050.
The political agreement was approved by 413 votes to 226, with 12 abstentions. The new regulation will require final approval from the EU’s member states before officially taking effect.
Ranking just behind China, the United States and India in terms of emissions, the EU made the strongest commitment to climate action and by 2023 had reduced emissions by 37% compared to 1990 levels.
Despite concessions on the 2040 target, the EU continues to affirm its global leadership in the fight against climate change and is calling on international partners to step up their efforts.
